What is Breast Cancer Screening?

At Lancaster Medical Centre, we understand the importance of proactive breast health. Regular breast cancer screening is a vital step in early detection, significantly improving treatment outcomes and saving lives. We encourage all women to prioritise their breast health and discuss their individual screening needs with their GP.

Understanding Your Risk:

While most women are considered at standard risk, certain factors can increase your likelihood of developing breast cancer. It’s crucial to discuss your personal risk factors with your GP. These factors may include:

  • Family history of breast cancer
  • Genetic predispositions
  • Previous breast conditions
  • Lifestyle factors

Understanding your risk level empowers you to make informed decisions about your screening schedule and any additional preventative measures.

Know Your Breasts: The Importance of Self-Examination

In addition to regular mammograms, becoming familiar with your breasts through regular self-examination is a valuable tool for early detection. We encourage you to

Perform monthly breast checks

Ideally, conduct your self-exam at the same time each month, a few days after your period ends, when your breasts are less tender.

Visual Inspection

Stand in front of a mirror and inspect your breasts for any changes in size, shape, or skin texture. Raise your arms overhead and repeat the inspection.

Manual Examination

Gently feel your breasts using your fingertips, moving in a circular motion. Check the entire breast, including the underarm area.

Early Detection: The Key to Successful Treatment

Early detection of breast cancer dramatically increases the chances of successful treatment and recovery. If you notice any changes in your breasts, such as lumps, pain, nipple discharge, or skin dimpling, please don’t hesitate to contact your GP at Lancaster Medical Centre immediately. We are here to provide support, guidance, and prompt referrals for further investigation if needed.
